Stand in Unison to Fight the Pandemic!

A consultative workshop with the religious leaders aimed at scaling-up community conversation program among their followers was conducted in Adama, at Dire International Hotel, from January 14-16, 2010.

The representatives of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church Patriarch, the President of the Supreme Council of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs, the President of Mekane Yesus Evangelical Church, Secretary General of the Ethiopian Kale Hiwot Church and the representative of the Union of Ethiopian Evangelical Churches attended the last day of the workshop.

They all reiterated that they shall work hand in hand to mitigate the impact of the virus which is a big threat to humanity and there by posing a danger to the development of the country. They said the fundamental teachings of their faiths are human centered and HIV/AIDS has become an unprecedented threat to humanity; and fighting it back would mean fulfilling their tasks. At the end of the workshop, all religious leaders expressed their readiness and vowed to stand in unison to fight against HIV/AIDS more actively than ever.
Finally, Ato Meskel Lera Deputy Director General of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office (HAPCO) told religious leaders and other participants that his office will avail every necessary support in their endeavor to advert the catastrophe of the virus.
The religious leaders presided on the workshop represent more than 80 percent of the countries population it was learned.
The workshop was organized by HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office.
