VCT

Volunteer Counseling and Testing (VCT) is a gateway to prevention, care, support and treatment of HIV/AIDS. HIV testing and counseling was started early stage of the HIV epidemic in Ethiopia. National guidelines on VCT were developed in 2002 with the aim of standardizing the testing protocols and the training of counselors and supporting the expansion of .counseling and testing services outside the health facilitates.Special target groups for testing and counseling include people seeking service at clinics for sexually transmitted infections, `blood donors, partners of people living with HIV/AIDS, and people seeking services at family planning clinics, antenatal clinics and youth facilities

Ethiopia is among the countries most heavily affected by the HIV epidemic. The cumulative number of PLWHA is about 1.5 million, with 95,000 under 15 years of age. The 2003 national prevalence in the urban and rural population are 12.6% and 2.6% respectively. Since 2004, there are an estimated 105,453 and 27,226 new AIDS cases in the adult and children population respectively. Some 90,000 adults and 25, 000 children have died of AIDS. About 265,358 PLWHA need antiretroviral treatment, and of this population, only 2% can afford to pay for ARVs and healthcare services.

PMTCT 

The HIV pandemic created an enormous challenge to the survival of mankind worldwide. With a national adult HIV prevalence of 2.1%, Ethiopia is one of the countries most severely hit by the epidemic. Besides the dominant heterosexual transmission, vertical virus transmission from mother to child accounts for more than 90% of pediatric AIDS. As PMTCT programs provide for both prevention of HIV transmission from mother to child and enrolment of infected pregnant women and their families into antiretroviral treatment, it is undertaken by the Government of Ethiopia in an effort to mitigate the impacts of the epidemic in the general population and amongst children in particular
