Addis Ababa, 11 March 2010:- The countdown to the 16th International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA) 2011 has begun. The conference is scheduled to be held from 4 – 8 December 2011 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Society for AIDS in Africa’s (SAA) high profile delegation expressed satisfaction at the progress Ethiopia is making in the preliminary preparation for hosting the next ICASA. Close to 10,000 people are expected to attend this conference. |

8 March 2010:- As the world marks International Women’s Day, there is growing concern that women and children are bearing the brunt of the AIDS epidemic. To turn the tide, UNAIDS, the International AIDS Society (IAS) and 14 other leading public and private sector organizations have teamed up to release a new scientific research agenda. The report titled, “Asking the Right Questions: Advancing an HIV Research Agenda for Women and Children” includes 20 specific recommendations to expand and improve responses to the HIV-related challenges facing women and children worldwide. |

8 March 2010 - Pretoria — African countries have seen a decline in HIV and AIDS, Tuberculosis and malaria mortality rates, says the 2010 Result Report released by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. The report, which was released on Monday, shows an outstanding progress in fighting the three diseases, particularly in Africa and how its investments have helped accelerate progress towards achieving the MDGs. Up to December 2009, AIDS mortality has decreased in many high burden countries with 2.5 million people currently on antiretroviral, a level of coverage deemed unattainable less than a decade ago. "790 000 HIV positive pregnant women in low and middle income countries received antiretroviral prophylaxis to prevent mother to child transmission, which represents 45 percent coverage of women in need," the report states. "Today countries are on track to meet the international target of halving TB prevalence by 2015." |
